SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING
What Is A SkinPen?
The SkinPen is a medical-grade microneedling device used to treat imperfections and improve the appearance of your skin.
By creating controlled micro-abrasions on the skin’s surface, the SkinPen stimulates your body’s natural healing process, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, which results in long-lasting, beautiful results, leading to improvements in the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and other skin issues.
SkinPen uses a pen-like device with multiple tiny needles that create micro-abrasions on the skin’s surface. This starts the process of new skin growth and collagen development.
These micro-abrasions trigger your body’s natural healing response, creating increased collagen and elastin production.
The increased production of collagen and elastin helps improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and other skin imperfections.

The SKINPEN Treatment
Schedule your skin care consultation with Leidy Shileds, ME to determine if SkinPen microneedling is the best option for your skin and concerns.
If SKINPEN is the best choice, at your appointment, the treatment area is cleansed, and a topical numbing cream can be applied to minimize discomfort.
The SkinPen device is used to gently glide across your skin, creating micro-abrasions. The procedure is performed in the office in approximately 45 minutes and has very little downtime.
Post-treatment care involves applying soothing serums, other skin care products and avoiding sun exposure.
What Is Microneedling?
History of Microneedling
In 1995, Dr. Michael Pistor, the founder of Meso Therapy, began using micro-punctures on the skin to stimulate collagen production, thereby creating the micro needling concept.
Two years later, in 1997, with further development of this process, using needle dermabrasion with a ‘tattoo pistol’ it was discovered that this would treat scars, however, not until a year after that in 1998, Dr. Des Fernandes started using a small needle stamp as a regular treatment in his surgical practice for collagen production.
In 2000, Horst Liebl, was the first to design a microneedling medical device, which gave the ability to treat larger areas of the skin easily and more quickly. His device didn’t have the shape of a pen, it looked more like a drum-shaped roller.
It was not until 2004 that a California company, Clinical Resolution Laboratory, designed a more advanced version of this device, which they named the MTS Roller.
In 2007, the first microneedling pen was introduced to the market, and in 2013, Bellus Medical launched its SkinPen.
After undergoing several adaptations over the years, SkinPen became the first and only microneedling device in the industry to receive FDA approval, with over 90 validated requirements met for both the device and safe, sterile cartridge.
